Ayo Akingbade
Ayo Akingbade, born 1994, is an artist, writer, and filmmaker. She works primarily with film, print, and installation, addressing themes of power, urbanism, and stance. Several of Akingbade’s early works documented experiences of rapid social change brought about by gentrification in London, with a particular focus on the borough of Hackney in East London where she was raised. Ayo has made twenty short films, ranging from experimental hybrids to more conventional narratives. Her work has been screened widely, including at the following venues: New York Film Festival (US), Viennale, Vienna (AT), International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), Barbican Centre, London, and MoMA’s Doc Fortnight, New York. Jitterbug was selected as part of Directors’ Fortnight at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival (FR). Her first monograph, Show Me The World Mister was published in 2023 by Book Works and Chisenhale Gallery, London. She was previously an artist-in-residence at Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht (NL), Borderland Residencies, Ludwig Forum Aachen (DE), and Triangle-Astérides, Marseille (FR).
